Artist Statement

I am fascinated by the western landscape, its mythology of transcendence, openness, and expansion. Researching certain sites of interest, there are diversions, many drawings, and wrong turns.

I am compelled to make paintings about these places, paintings that resonate in the mind and require some time to reveal their effect.

Though often inspired by a specific place, I have found no shortcuts in making a good painting. If things go well, the painting will develop a mind of its own and assert its will beyond what feels comfortable, until it looks unfamiliar to me.  It is this beguiling quality that interests me most about painting: its ability to shift relentlessly, outlasting our desire to control and define.
